Peace at South Atlantic Ocean

submitted to The Globe & Mail (Toronto)

Again tension builds up around Falklands while the 30th aniversary of islands occupation approaches. Irritative vessels bans by South American countries and provocative royal visits and Georgias proyects by Great Britain increased the already open sovereignty conflict.
The only ones who need this kind of facts are politicians like Mrs Fernandez or Mr Cameron that use them to hide important local problems (inflation, riots, currency decisions). Violence is at the door and weapons producers are happy.
Persistence of XIXth century colonial positions whether in favour of UK or RA must be completely forgotten together with the false self-determination interpretation that supports them. It is time for the parts to sit down and negotiate a real solution to the problem. The best way for peace and justice is that Falklands became a totally independent country with the same rights that UK, RA, USA or Canada. The alternative is that the islands were internationalised under UN control like the Antarctic Continent should be.
